Emilia Durka is a Polish artist and landscape architect. I explore landscape as a portrait of presence and memory.

Gloria Victis Gloria Victis explores landscapes marked by the memory of war and the struggle for freedom. Rather than depicting battles or historical events, Emilia turns to the places where history has left its traces — fields, forests, meadows, and avenues that have endured long after the conflict has passed. Inspired by Eliza Orzeszkowa’s Gloria victis, the series considers nature as a silent chronicler of human drama. Through expressive and atmospheric landscapes, the paintings reflect on memory, loss, and the persistence of nature — on what remains when history falls silent. 08.2026 LETO GALLERY SPACE – 1st Edition of the Dańków Artist Residency We are pleased to present the results of the first edition of the Dańków Artist Residency. The invited artists spent a month working at the estate and sculpture park located near Warsaw - a place with a remarkable history that has long fostered creative work, science, and art. Enrique Argote, Ivan Buenader, Emilia Durka,and Máximo González created works centered on the residency's theme - „space". 08.2026 ELLE DECORATION Ta wystawa powstała podczas artystycznej rezydencji wśród parku i natury. Efekty pierwszej edycji Dańków Artist Residency Kilkanaście kilometrów od centrum Warszawy, z dala od zgiełku miasta, znajduje się miejsce, gdzie czas płynie zupełnie inaczej. W zabytkowym parku i gospodarstwie w Dańkowie przez miesiąc powstawały prace, które podważają nasze dotychczasowe myślenie o przestrzeni. Teraz można je podziwiać w galerii LETO. 08.2026 WOLSKI FOUNDATION SPACE – 1st Edition of the Dańków Artist Residency The first edition of the Wolski Foundation Residency Program was conceived as an initiative supporting artists' creative processes through shared time dedicated to working, discussion, and the preparation of an exhibition. The central theme of the residency is Space – understood both as a reference to the unique atmosphere of Danków, a place of return and intergenerational connection, and as a subject of reflection and a conceptual framework within artistic practice. 08.2026 DOM I WNĘTRZE Przestrzeń na rezydencję – pierwsze spotkanie artystów zorganizowane przez Wolski Foundation Artysta Xawery Wolski powołał fundację pod własnym nazwiskiem dwa lata temu. Byłam w Dańkowie podczas inauguracji tego projektu, a teraz wróciłam tam, by zobaczyć efekty pierwszej rezydencji artystycznej zorganizowanej przez fundację. Prace zaproszonych twórców prezentowano w otwartych pracowniach, których drzwi i okna wychodziły na zieleń i niebo. W tej scenerii obrazy i instalacje stawały się częścią miejsca, zachęcając do zatrzymania się i uważniejszego kontaktu ze sztuką. 08.2026 ARTYSTYCZNA PODRÓŻ HESTII Wernisaż wystawy podsumowującej Rezydencję Artystyczną w Dańkowie w Galerii LETO Emilia Durka, na co dzień mocno związana z tradycją pejzażu, zamiast przedstawiać krajobraz Dańkowa, skupiła się na rosnących tam drzewach. Potraktowała je jako świadków historii oraz symbole ciągłości, łączące przeszłość z tym, co dopiero ma się narodzić. Wraz z powstawaniem kolejnych obrazów, figuracja coraz silniej ustępowała miejsca abstrakcji: motyw drzew odbitych w wodzie stał się subtelnym autoportretem wynikającym z emocji, sposobu patrzenia i osobistej relacji z otoczeniem. Seria pokazuje, że wyjątkowość danego miejsca nie opiera się na jego idealizowaniu, lecz powstaje dzięki uważnemu, żywemu spotkaniu z naturą. 08.2026 DELA ART COLLECTION Przesytrzeń. Pierwsza edycja programu rezydencyjnego w Dańkowie W swojej twórczości łączy elementy pamięci i uważnej obserwacji, aby uchwycić ulotne wrażenia efemerycznych krajobrazów. Oddaje je w charakterystycznym, autorskim języku malarskim. Badając relacje między miejscem a pamięcią, przekształca pejzaż w metaforę ludzkiej natury. Krajobraz staje się odbiciem jej emocjonalnego i osobistego doświadczenia – rozwija się poprzez przeżycie, zamiast przedstawiać konkretne, jednoznacznie określone miejsce.

Wheresoever she is, there is Eden Created during an artist residency in Dańków, the series explores trees as witnesses to time, memory, and the continuity of a place. Rather than depicting the landscape directly, the paintings focus on trees and their reflections in water, gradually transforming recognisable forms into abstract compositions. The reflected tree becomes a subtle self-portrait — a way of expressing emotion, perception, and a personal relationship with the surrounding landscape. The series explores how the character of a place emerges not through its idealisation, but through an attentive and intimate encounter with nature. She is the Landscape These landscapes function as self-portraits — carrying nostalgia, curiosity, and the quiet tension of being in-between. They do not offer postcard beauty; instead, they reveal a subtle beauty to those who look closely. Delicate yet resilient, intimate yet vast, naïve and wise at once, they hold a sense of wonder for the small miracles of life: a glance, a breath, a memory of the earth. Across the series, the landscape becomes a feminine presence — shifting, emotional, yet coherent. It unfolds like a lived experience rather than a fixed place. The works move through intimacy and concealment, light and shadow, force and stillness, labor and contemplation. Solastalgia Solastalgia explores the relationship between memory, place, and a changing landscape. The series grew from the experience of returning to familiar places that no longer feel the same—transformed by time, urbanisation, nature, and memory. Rather than focusing solely on loss, the paintings observe these changes with attention, finding traces of human labour and unexpected beauty in the altered landscape. Solastalgia becomes a way of negotiating the distance between remembered places and their present reality, and of finding a new relationship with a landscape that continues to change. Landscapes from New York Emilia Durka, who is deeply rooted in the tradition of landscape painting, chose to focus on the trees growing in Dańków rather than depicting the landscape itself. She treated them as witnesses to history and symbols of continuity, linking the past with what is yet to come. As she created more and more paintings, figuration increasingly gave way to abstraction. The motif of trees reflected in water became a subtle self-portrait derived from emotion, a way of seeing, and a personal relationship with the surroundings. The series demonstrates that the uniqueness of a given place does not result from its idealization, but emerges from a mindful, vivid encounter with nature. Emilia Durka is a Polish artist and landscape architect. LIVING LANDSCAPES My work in landscape architecture is inseparable from my painting practice. Designing and researching landscapes allows me to work with living materials — light, wind, soil and time — the same elements that shape my paintings. GARDENS IN TIMES OF CRISIS My research explores diverse gardens conceived by extraordinary individuals, all of them sharing a distinctive characteristic: their creation in times of crisis. Some emerged in response to adversity, while others acquired uniqueness in the midst of scarcity. Beauty reveals itself in exceptional ways when it surprises us in unexpected places, and that is why I find the achievement of those who made life flourish in the midst of devastation especially poignant. PRUSSIAN PARK RESTORATION AND CONSERVATION The manor-park complex in Komalwy is both a cultural and natural treasure, shaping the identity of Warmia’s landscape. This project honors its historical significance while unveiling its intrinsic aesthetic essence. Through careful interventions, the park’s heritage is celebrated, breathing new life into its terrain. Each element of planting, pathway and spatial composition respects history while encouraging a dialogue between past and present, allowing visitors to experience the landscape as both heritage and living environment. BALEARIC LANDSCAPES In my Balearic projects, every element is designed to harmonize with nature while embracing resilience and sustainability. Plant selections focus on Mediterranean species known for their adaptability to challenging microclimates, minimal water requirements, and compatibility with local pollinators. These landscapes embrace the rugged garrigue aesthetic, offering dynamic compositions where texture, scent and seasonal change are felt as much as seen. The result is a multisensory experience — rustic yet sophisticated — inviting contemplation of nature’s subtle, ever-shifting beauty. ANGLO-CHINESE GARDEN HERITAGE REVITALISATION This restoration project fuses oriental and classical influences, drawing on romanticism and botanical opulence from the 18th and 19th centuries. Meticulous research and profound respect for the garden’s origins guide each intervention, preserving its essence while introducing renewed vitality. The project celebrates heritage, culture, and the enduring beauty of landscape, inviting visitors to experience the timeless dialogue between history and living nature. PIET OUDOLF GARDEN IN THE HAMPTONS During my internship at Summerhill Landscapes in New York, I contributed to the installation of over 16,000 perennials curated by Piet Oudolf. This experience deepened my understanding of seasonal rhythm, plant selection and harmonious composition. Observing Oudolf’s philosophy of naturalistic planting emphasized the elegance of perennial cycles and the expressive potential of plants as living brushstrokes in a landscape canvas. These lessons continue to inform both my landscape practice and my painting. USE OF THE INVASIVE PLANT ACCORDING TO THE EXAMPLE OF ARUNDO DONAX AS SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL IN GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE My research explored the potential of the invasive reed Arundo donax as a sustainable material for urban landscapes. Resistant, lightweight, and durable, it offers aesthetic and functional possibilities akin to bamboo, aligning with circular economy principles. Harnessing ethnobotanical knowledge, I propose designs that integrate this species responsibly, demonstrating how urban landscapes can be simultaneously functional, beautiful, and ecologically conscious. BOTANICAL COMPOSITIONS Crafting intricate botanical installations that inhabit interior spaces is where nature meets design. These compositions translate the rhythms and textures of living landscapes into immersive, sensory experiences, blurring the line between garden, installation, and artwork. Every plant, form and scent is orchestrated as part of a living composition, emphasizing the poetic potential of botanical materials within designed spaces.
